Formula Student team UTM

About Us

We are FS Team UTM - a group of students of Technical University of Moldova, which started its activity in 2022. We are the first in the Republic of Moldova who set ourselves the goal of competing with teams of students from other countries in the International Formula Student engineering competition, in which is necessary not only to design, but also to build a race car following a strict set of rules. In summer, taking part in the competition stages, we will check how fast and correctly the car is built. By participating, we represent the TUM, our partners, the Republic of Moldova and ourselves as specialists. The efficiency of the cooperation of our departments gives us the opportunity to develop our skills from different perspectives. Each student is valued by the oppurtunity to offer solutions and ideas in order to increase the competitiveness of the team in solving problems of engineering, assembly, design, electronics, information technology and management.

FORMULA STUDENT

YOUNG TALENTS WORK INTERDISCIPLINARY ON A JOINT PROJECT

The Formula Student is an international design competition for students. The first Formula Student event took place in 1981 in the United States, featuring only combustion cars. Currently, over 800 university teams take part in 14 worldwide competitions, showcasing their self-designed and self-built combustion, electric, and/or driverless race cars.
Students are given free hand in creating concepts for their respective racecars. The regulations, published every year, primarily set safety standards for the competing vehicles. The introduction of the electric category in 2010, and the driverless category in 2016, pushed the students’ innovations to be relevant for the future of transport.

Unlike other racing series, having the fastest car does not guarantee victory in the Formula Student. Teams are evaluated in eight events; five of which are dynamic and three static. Racing performance, deep understanding of engineering theory, and cost-related presentations are the focus of the Formula Student. Presentations are evaluated by a panel of judges consisting of experts from motorsport, automotive, and logistical industries.
Statics 325 points
At the Cost event the expenses for the car are presented. Each component has a price, as written in the rules. The production of 1000 cars serves as a calculation basis
Cost and Manufacturing (100 Points):

At the Engineering Design Event the construction details are presented. A judging Team consisting of engineering experts discusses each solution for every details of the car.
Engineering Design
(150 Points):

The Business Presentation has to be held in front of a fictional group of potential investors. The goal is to deliver a convincing selling plan including a marketing strategy for 1000 cars to the jury.
Business Plan Presentation (75 Points):

Dynamics 625 points
At the Skid Pad the Suspensions is tested by driving a total of 4 rounds in the shape of an 8, half of them clockwise, then counterclockwise.
Skid-Pad (75 Points):
A Race on an circuit made of chicanes, obstacles and corners. This event is also part of the qualification for the endurance race.
Autocross (100 Points):
The Endurance is the toughest event of the Formula Student. At this contest the driver and the car have to withstand a 22km long Endurance Race. Those taking part in this race are among the top 25.
Endurance (325 Points):
This Event takes place during the Endurance Race. The winner of this contest is the team which is emitting the least amount of CO2 during the 22km long race.
Fuel Economy (100 Points):
The Basics of this contest are simple: Which car is the fastest on a 75 meters long track.
Acceleration (75 Points):
